Fethi Sahraoui is an Algerian artist who photographs rural communities in his home country. In particular, Sahraoui captures scenes of ordinary life in the Saharawi camps on the south-western border of Algeria. A member of the photography society Algerian Collective 220, Sahraoui exhibits frequently in his home country. His images are scenes of communities; families, and individuals that are full of life and its attendant joy and pain.

A child of the desert
In October of 2016, he went to the refugee camps near Tindouf to document the life of their temporary inhabitants. The young photographer’s imaginings of the desert with its vast stretches, apparently without borders, thus came face to face with the daily reality of conflict and the migratory flux which has taken place in the theatre of the Sahara for decades.
For each style, a different camera
Fethi Sahraoui alternates the usage of a discreet and light camera in an iPhone, which facilitates greater spontaneity and a certain dynamism, and a medium format film which give his shots a far greater depth with the photos appearing more posed and the moment being shared with his subjects seeming more solemn.
Emergence onto the European scene
As a member of the Algerian Collective 220, Fethi Sahraoui exhibits a great deal in Algeria. He is also the first winner of the “Young Talent” prize at the “Fourth Image” and his exhibition, “Mercy Island,” which was shown at the Institute of the Arab World, won him the Prize of the Friends of this institution.
